City Power seeks ISO Recertification from SABS City Power is committed to safety and all ISO standards that promote and protect employees from injury and hurt, arising from its operations. Speaking at the launch of the Surveillance Audit at City Power yesterday, the Acting Managing Director Sicelo Xulu welcomed the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) lead auditors Berry Morakile and his colleague Braam Raubenheimer. Xulu said that City Power had prioritised safety, health, environment quality through the elevation of the division to Exco where policy was approved. "SHEQ is now part of Exco, an indication of the commitment the management has made to matters of safety of both equipment and employees," he said. He pointed out that City Power's leadership and management fully supports the periodic assessment of its systems' functional health. Another sign of the support and commitment by City Power was the overflowing management representatives at the A-Block, 4th floor, Madiba boardroom who were there to welcome the exercise to recertify City Power through the identification of gaps, if any, in the operational systems of the utility. Noting the importance of retaining the City Power status of ISO 14001:2004 (Environmental Management) an OHSAS 18001:2007 (Health and Safety), Xulu told the SABS lead auditors that he would, on behalf of City Power, be interested to get feedback from them once they had inspected and audited the organisation. "We would like to get feeback of what you have found from your auditing our systems," he said. Morakile, speaking on behalf of the SABS auditors extended a warm hand of friendship, saying their job on this surveillance audit was to help close the gaps and identify loopholes where they existed, if they did. He then explained that the surveillance audit would take the form of a sample. "From the sample, if we make any finding we would expect that those findings would be corrected in all others areas of the system since we are not going to be doing a full scale audit," he observed. Morakile was quick to say that he would be bitterly disappointed if there were any major findings because much work had gone into the original audit. He also called upon all City Power employees to be part of the audit because the system drivers, SHEQ, were not expected to shoulder the burden of running the entire City Power system on their own. "Your involvement as employees shows that you are working together to make the system perform," he said. Morakile also solemnly declared the results or findings of the surveillance audit would be treated with confidentiality. He encouraged City Power to uphold the highest standards regarding their certification. |
